Guinness 0.0

If Lucky Saint owns the lager category, Guinness 0.0 owns stout — and it is not close. Brewed at St James's Gate in Dublin using the same natural ingredients as the original before the alcohol is removed through cold filtration, it arrives with something most alcohol-free beers lack entirely: ritual. The widget is in the can. The two-part pour still applies. The ceremony is intact.

Ingredients: water, barley, hops, yeast.

What comes out of that pour is convincing — dark ruby, almost black, with the characteristic creamy tan head. The aroma is roasted malt with faint chocolate and coffee notes. On the palate those same flavours carry through, though slightly muted and marginally sweeter than the full-strength version. The mouthfeel is thinner than a regular Guinness — reviewers consistently note this and they are right — but it is still the most substantial alcohol-free stout available.

At under £1.80 a can and available in virtually every supermarket and an increasing number of pubs on draught, it sets the standard for accessibility in this category.
