Big Drop is one of the UK's specialist alcohol-free breweries — they brew exclusively low and no alcohol beer, which means every product in their range is designed from the ground up without alcohol rather than dealcoholised after the fact. The Pine Trail Pale Ale is their flagship and it shows that approach paying off.

Ingredients: water, malted barley, oats, hops (Citra, Mosaic), yeast.

The pour is a clear pale amber with a decent off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is piney and hoppy with a honey note underneath. On the palate it is dry and bitter-forward with lemon and pine oils coming through cleanly. It lacks the body of a full-strength pale ale but what it does deliver is genuine hop character without the sweetness that undermines many competitors in this category.

For drinkers who want something more interesting than a supermarket lager but find Ghost Ship's citrus character too pronounced, Big Drop Pale Ale sits usefully in between.
