Beck's Blue
Updated: Oct 17
Beck's Blue is the original mainstream alcohol-free lager in the UK — it has been on supermarket shelves since the 1980s when the category barely existed. That longevity tells you something about reliability, though not necessarily about ambition.

Ingredients: water, malted barley, hops, hop extract, yeast.
The pour is clear pale gold with a thin white head that dissipates quickly — functional rather than inviting. The aroma is light and slightly grainy. On the palate it is clean, crisp, and easy — closer to sparkling water with beer flavour than a drink with genuine character. It lacks the body and hop presence of Lucky Saint and the complexity of Ghost Ship, but it does the basic job without any off-notes or unpleasant aftertaste.
Its strength is availability and price. At around £1.00 a bottle and stocked in virtually every supermarket, it is the reliable fallback when better options are not available. The 275ml format is slightly underwhelming — you finish it quickly and are left wanting either more of it or something better.
