St Austell Proper Job IPA 0.5%

St Austell spent over two years developing the 0.5% version of their flagship IPA, and it shows. Where some alcohol-free IPAs arrive thin and unconvincing — all aroma, no follow-through — Proper Job 0.5% actually delivers on the promise of the style. Brewed with the same Cascade, Willamette and Chinook hops as the full-strength original, it hits citrus, grapefruit and a faint pineapple note in the right order.

Ingredients: water, malted barley, hops (Chinook, Centennial, Citra), yeast.

The pour is amber-gold with a firm white head and steady carbonation — it looks the part. The bitterness is genuine rather than approximated, which is the make or break test for any alcohol-free IPA. The finish is dry and clean without that slightly thin aftertaste that undermines many in this category.

Less widely available than Lucky Saint or Ghost Ship — distribution is patchy outside Morrisons and specialist retailers — but worth seeking out if you have a preference for something with more hop character.
